On Nov. 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan tore through the Philippines, killing more than 6,000 people and damaging or destroying more than 1 million homes. The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) quickly stepped in, offering grants to its partner church body, the Lutheran Church in the Philippines (LCP), and sending a team to plan for the island nation’s long-term recovery. Because of the generosity of LCMS members, more than 50 Typhoon Haiyan-damaged homes have been rebuilt and restored, and there is hope among residents.
ST. LOUIS, December 27, 2013—The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) has released a video showing the immediate and ongoing disaster relief ministry of the LCMS and its partner, the Lutheran Church in the Philippines, in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. Viewers will see images – some sure to be disturbing – of the effects of the typhoon and hear from church leaders who were on-site within a week of the typhoon that struck Nov. 8.
During the distribution stage, the team loaded 5 large trucks and traveled nearly 36 hours to reach the typhoon disaster areas on the island of Leyte. The tired and hungry victims were so happy and hopeful at the thought and anticipation of receiving food and water.

ST. LOUIS, November 14, 2013—A team from The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) plans to depart for the Philippines Friday, Nov. 15, to provide immediate relief and begin planning for the long-term recovery in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.
Objectives include working collaboratively with the LCMS partner church there and LCMS staff members in the Asia Pacific region and “to get on the ground and see what the needs are as soon as possible.”
The LCMS partner church in the Philippines has three congregations in areas hit hardest by the massive storm, with destruction and damage reported to members’ homes and church property.
