The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod International Center in St. Louis held its fourth annual “Buzz Off Burgers” to benefit the Lutheran Malaria Initiative on Monday, April 30, 2012. Employees paid $7 for grilled burgers, chips and soda, while President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison and the Rev. Dr. Frederic W. Baue entertained employees on the banjo, fiddle and guitar. The day’s grillers included Terry Biesboer, Rev. Jon Vieker and Randy Fauser. Because of rain, the event was held indoors. The event coincided with the LCMS Council of Presidents meeting in St. Louis, so the members of the praesidium and the district presidents were able to participate. Employees and guests contributed nearly $6,400 today for LMI!

The LCMS encouraged Lutherans worldwide to join with the Lutheran Malaria Initiative and take a moment to pray at 2:40 p.m. local time (14:40 on a 24-hour clock) to consider all those suffering from malaria, and those who will lose a child or other family member to the disease.

The Kantorei is a 16-voice choir of seminarians studying at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (CTS). The Rev. Kantor Richard C. Resch founded and still directs the choir, who tours each year throughout the United States and who also recently released a CD of Easter hymnody entitled,  “He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!” On April 13, 2012, these students, who are all studying for the Office of the Holy Ministry, sang for the first time at the International Center, St. Louis, Mo., during the chapel service. The Rev. Dr. Timothy C. J. Quill, dean of students and dean of international studies at CTS,  served as preacher.

Nunes, president of Lutheran World Relief, encourage Lutherans, no matter where they are on World Malaria Day April 25, 2012, to say a special prayer at 2:40 p.m. (14:40 on a 24-hour clock) for those who suffer from malaria or will lose a child or other family member to the disease. World Malaria Day offers an opportunity to raise awareness of the devastating effects of this disease and encourage people to join in the worldwide effort to end malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, shares the words of Paul in Romans 4 and explains how Christ was put to death for our transgressions and was raised from the dead for our justification. “We are declared righteous in Christ,” Harrison said. “It’s objective. It’s outside of us. The deed is done. There is nothing you can do to earn Heaven or gain salvation. It’s done. Jesus did it. Just believe it.”
